Abstract:
Usually, women running for office in Chile and in other countries complain against media coverage of their campaigns. The 2005 Chilean presidential election was a good opportunity to test these criticisms. This is a fragment of a study that examined differences in news coverage of then-presidential candidate and now president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and her male contenders in the 2005 election. In addition, the study explored the impact of these differences on voters’ perceptions using agenda setting as a theoretical framework. For that purpose, a content analysis of three national newspapers was compared to a public opinion poll. The findings show striking differences in coverage and suggest that the press influenced public perceptions of the candidates.
